Course Overview

Agriculture

Agriculture is the practice of cultivating land, growing crops, and raising livestock for food, fiber, medicinal plants, and other products used to sustain and improve human life. It is one of the oldest and most important economic activities, forming the backbone of many economies, especially in developing countries. Agriculture includes activities such as crop production, animal husbandry, aquaculture, forestry, and agribusiness. It provides raw materials for industries and plays a key role in employment creation, rural development, and national economic growth. Modern agriculture has evolved to include improved technologies such as irrigation systems, mechanization, improved seed varieties, and fertilizers to increase productivity. It also focuses on sustainable practices that protect the environment, such as conservation agriculture and climate-smart farming. Agriculture is not only about food production but also about ensuring efficient use of natural resources like land, water, and soil for long-term productivity and sustainability.

Food Security

Food security refers to a situation where all people, at all times, have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs for an active and healthy life. It is built on four main pillars: availability of food, access to food, utilization (proper nutrition), and stability (consistent access over time). Food security ensures that individuals and communities are not affected by hunger or malnutrition. Achieving food security depends on many factors, including agricultural productivity, income levels, food distribution systems, and political stability. Challenges such as climate change, poverty, conflicts, and poor infrastructure can threaten food security. Governments, NGOs, and international organizations work together to promote food security through policies, agricultural programs, and emergency food assistance to vulnerable populations. Ultimately, food security is essential for health, economic development, and social stability.
