Public Health

Public Health is all around us. It is in the air we breathe, the water we drink, the homes we live in, and the behaviors in which we engage. It includes our health care systems and the agencies and services that protect our health and environment. Public health is a vital yet often overlooked component of modern life; most of us do not think about it as part of our daily lives. It may only receive public attention when a crisis occurs or when the public health system falters or fails. It may become an important personal focus when we need a specialized service, when we don ’ t have access to a private clinic, or when we face a neighborhood environmental concern. Public health encompasses a broad range of activities and functions, but among its most important are promoting and preserving the health of populations through prevention.
